Applying for a passport, visa, or government exam online usually comes with strict photo upload specifications: exact pixel dimensions (such as 413×531 px or 600×600 px) and a maximum file size (typically under 50KB or 100KB).
If your photo is off by a few pixels or a few kilobytes, the portal will immediately reject it with errors like “Dimensions out of range” or “File exceeds size limit”.
Here is how to get your passport photo right on the first try without uploading your personal face scan to any third-party servers.
1. Common Passport & Visa Dimension Standards
Different portals follow different international specifications:
- Standard Passport (35 × 45 mm at 300 DPI): 413 × 531 pixels (used by Indian passport portals, Schengen visas, and UK/EU official applications).
- US Visa & Diversity Visa (2 × 2 inches at 300 DPI): 600 × 600 pixels (1:1 square ratio).
- Exam & Job Portals (UPSC, SSC, State Services): Usually 350 × 450 pixels or between 20 KB and 50 KB.
2. Step 1: Crop to the Correct Framing
Before resizing dimensions, crop the photo so your face and shoulders are properly centered:
- Open PixelKit Crop Studio and drop your photo.
- Select the 3:4 or 1:1 aspect ratio preset (depending on your country’s requirements).
- Align the visual rule-of-thirds grid so that your face covers roughly 70% to 80% of the frame.
- Click Apply Crop.
3. Step 2: Set the Exact Pixel Dimensions
- Click Scale & Resize on the file card.
- Under Standard Output Presets, click Passport ID (413 × 531 px) or enter custom dimensions.
- Ensure the aspect lock is checked so the photo doesn’t stretch or distort.
- Click Apply Scale.
4. Step 3: Compress Under 50KB or 100KB
Portals require photos to be lightweight for their database:
- In the Compression & Size settings, select Max Size mode.
- Choose 100 KB (or 50 KB if required by your application portal).
- Set the output format to JPG / JPEG (universal format accepted by all portals).
- Click Convert & Compress Now.
Your photo is processed completely in your browser memory and downloaded directly to your device, ready for acceptance on your first submission.
